A Late-Night Message from Moscow

A client's existing supplier suddenly couldn't deliver — not a quality issue, but a severed payment channel. Past eleven at night, a WhatsApp message came to Dongguan. Seventy-two hours later, we delivered a complete proposal. Better product. Lower cost.

With loss comes gain.
After we lost so much, our business went through chaos. But once we turned to our new supplier, everything went back to normal. And the cost was lower.

Eleven at Night

May 2023 Business Division
A WhatsApp message. Dmitry. An importer from Moscow dealing in kitchenware.
We had been in contact for nearly half a year. He had always shown interest, but nothing concrete ever happened. Good conversations, then silence.
This message was different. One line:
My current supplier cannot deliver anymore. Can you help.
Not a quality problem. His old supplier's payment channel had been suddenly cut off. Money couldn't go out, so products couldn't ship. Three containers stuck at port. Dmitry's warehouse was running on empty.

Seventy-Two Hours

The consultant replied that night: Send me your specs.
First thing next morning, she synced Dmitry's requirements with R&D and Production. A stainless steel insulated bowl set. Not overly complex, but involving three different molds and two surface treatment processes.
R&D pulled up the proposal notes from earlier conversations with Dmitry. Good thing we kept records. Design direction, material preferences, target price range — all there.
Three days later, a complete proposal. Production confirmed: there was a gap on the line. They could slot it in.
Dmitry replied: This was faster than I expected.

Why It Was Cheaper

Dmitry's previous supplier had quoted about fifteen percent higher. Not our place to comment on someone else's pricing. But you could see where the margins went.
Packaging. His old supplier outsourced it. Extra middleman markup. Our packaging division handles it directly.
Surface treatment. His old supplier used an outsourced electroplating plant. We have a long-term partner facility, batch pricing locked in.
Dmitry looked at the itemized quote and asked one last question: Are you sure this price includes everything.
Yes. Our habit: if it can be written down, it goes on the paper.

After Three Shipments

The first batch went by rail. Twenty-three days to Moscow. Dmitry spent two days checking every carton. Nothing wrong.
The second batch added two more SKUs. His customers wanted larger sizes of the insulated bowls. R&D took five days to modify molds and resample.
By the third batch, Dmitry said something.
I lost a supplier. But I think I found a partner.

Sometimes loss isn't about doing anything wrong. But when you choose again, you know more clearly what you're looking for.
